Note: BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic of body fatness or health. Athletes may have a high BMI due to increased muscularity rather than increased body fatness.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. A high BMI can indicate high body fatness. BMI screens for weight categories that may lead to health problems, but it does not diagnose the body fatness or health of an individual.
Healthcare providers use BMI as a screening tool to identify possible weight problems for adults. However, to determine if BMI is a health risk, a healthcare provider performs further assessments. Such assessments include evaluating diet, physical activity, family history, and other health screenings.
While the BMI calculator is widely used for health assessments, it does have limitations. It may overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build. Conversely, it may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle mass.
